Don’t Forget Tax Day!

They’re inevitable, and they’re due April 15!

Taxes appear to be as old as civilization, and the laws are as different from country to country as the people themselves are. Some countries have no income tax; some even have no property tax. During the Middle Ages, soap was taxed in Europe (and now we know why hygiene was not robustly practiced then). Some other funny taxes through the ages:

  • Russian tax on beards — no hipsters back then

  • French tax on salt — supposedly contributed to starting the French Revolution

  • British tax on political opponents — Oliver Cromwell taxed his foes, then used the money to fund actions against them!

  • Danish tax on cow flatulence — that’s one way to fight global warming
