Let's Get to Know Each Other!
Technology can keep us connected to events on the other side of the world. But how well do you know your own neighbors? Do you know the names of the people living on either side of you? Is there someone who will pick up your mail or feed your cat when you're away? A neighborhood where people interact and get to know each other is not only a more pleasant place to live, it's also a safer place to live. If you're having some difficulty breaking the ice, consider some of these ways to meet your neighbors. Join the local neighborhood association. You'll find out the local gossip as well as proposed local ordinances that affect your area, get a chance to meet local law enforcement, and get to know local business owners. Organize a block party or a community yard sale to benefit a local church or charity. People who normally avoid these kinds of events may be drawn out by the opportunity to support a local food bank or school. It's also a great reason to go knocking on doors and chat with the people on your street. Walk up to someone. It seems like common sense, but it can be intimidating to approach a stranger. But if you see someone working in their garden or unloading groceries from their car, you've got an opportunity to connect with a shared interest or ask some questions to break the ice. "Hey, I like gardening too!" and "Is that the best local grocery?" are easy ways to strike up a conversation. And don't forget the power of sugar: Delivering freshly baked cookies to a neighbor's house should at least warrant an invite for a cup of coffee!
