Bring out the jack-o’-lanterns, because spooky season is finally here! While we wait for the big day, though, there are lots of things to learn about, plus a day devoted to celebrating cats. (The cats may prefer a year-round devotion, but that’s all part of their charm.)

Oct. 10 — World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health Day reminds us that mental well-being matters every day. Take a moment to check in with yourself and others.

Oct. 29 — National Cat Day. Our favorite purr-y friends deserve to celebrate in style, so don’t skimp on the catnip today.

Oct. 31 — Halloween. It may not be the coldest day of the year, but it has the most chills. Have a terror-ific time!

Front Porch Folklore: Out With the Old Broom. Did you know? Superstition holds that brooms are more than dust busters … they’re said to sweep away bad energy. Some people believe it’s bad luck to bring your broom with you when you move, as it may carry remnants of old problems. So treat yourself to a new broom if you’re buying a new house. Maybe this month you’ll get lucky and find one that flies!
