Did you know? After several years of ultra-low mortgage rates, today's rates are leaving some buyers in sticker shock. But historically, today's rates are well within a normal range. From 1971 through today, 30-year fixed mortgage rates have averaged 7.7%. The highest-ever rate was a staggering 18.53% in October 1981, and rates didn't dip below 5% until April 2009.
