Anatomy of a Mortgage Payment

Do you know what’s included in a monthly mortgage payment?

In addition to paying toward principal (the loan amount) and interest (the fee for borrowing money), you’re likely paying into escrow, which is an account the lender uses to pay for property taxes, homeowners insurance and — if your down payment was less than 20% — mortgage insurance. Because taxes change every year, the escrow amount will be adjusted annually, and your payment will change accordingly.
